Pensées Quote
Referencing the paradox of human nature Pascal says,
All is one, all is diverse. How many natures exist in man!
If he exalts himself, I will humble him. If he humbles himself, I exalt him. And I continue to contradict him until he comprehends that he is an incomprehensible monster.
There is no certainty, apart from faith, as to whether man was created by a good God, by an evil demon, or by chance, so depending on our origin, it is doubtful whether these principles given to us are true, or false, or uncertain.
So truth is neither our quarry nor within our grasp; that it does not reside on earth but is at home in heaven, in God’s bosom; and that we can know it only to the extent that it pleases him to reveal it. Let us then learn our true nature from the uncreated and incarnate Truth.
